There are a (large) number of warning signs that you may have a food intolerance. Those warning signs can have both outer and inner characteristics. For example, you can get a rash on your skin or suffer from bloating. In a number of articles, I will discuss (some of) these characteristics. If you suffer from one or more of the characteristics, it may be that you suffer from a food intolerance.

First, briefly, the difference between food intolerance and food allergy.

There are two types of food hypersensitivity: food intolerance (this is the non-allergic food hypersensitivity) and food allergy. The difference between these two forms is that with intolerance the body reacts unusually to a certain substance, without the immune system being involved. The reaction usually follows a longer time after eating the food; complaints occur after 2 to 3 days.

In an allergy, the immune system reacts to a substance it comes into contact with, causing the body to produce antibodies. The reaction typically follows within a short time after eating the food; complaints often occur within half an hour after eating the food.

Sign 1 – You have to go to the toilet several times a day

This might be familiar to you, you are just about to go on a nice outing, you have to go to the restroom again. Not only that, but you also worry about whether there is a proper toilet at the event you are going to. Doubt hits you and gets worse and worse. You just suffer from the fact that you have to go to the toilet a lot …. you think!

This is a common mindset of someone with a strong food intolerance, as the most immediate and immediate symptom is digestive stress. This includes things like severe abdominal pain, gas, bloating and diarrhea – the hallmark of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

The main cause of IBS is thought to be fermentable, poorly absorbed carbohydrates known as FODMAPs. The concept of FODMAPs was developed by research at Monash University, and they remain the leading authority in this field.

The only scientifically proven diet treatment for IBS is called a Low FODMAP diet, with a success rate of up to 76% (See Resource).

Sign 2 – You regularly experience chronic muscle or joint pain

A second warning sign of a food intolerance can be that you experience a lot of chronic muscle and joint pain. It often happens that because of these pains, you feel a limitation in your daily activities. Just think, for example, of the fact that you constantly suffer from that joint pain in your knee that severely restricts walking. You can walk less and this also limits your options. Remember to hold your cutlery when eating. Sometimes it can go to the point where you lose strength in your hand(s).

In the above cases, we typically talk about (a form of) Fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is a newly recognized medical condition that affects up to 6% of the population, especially middle-aged women. It is characterized by long-lasting and widespread pain that is not specific to a specific area.

One study found that nearly 50% of those with fibromyalgia reported their symptoms worsening after eating certain foods

Research in this area has shown that many fibromyalgia patients report that symptoms are frequently triggered by foods they eat. In fact, one study found that nearly 50% of those with fibromyalgia reported their symptoms worsening after eating certain foods. Which food that exactly is, is a matter of accurately determining what someone eats, which later causes symptoms. This makes it possible to determine which food may be the cause.

Discovering your own food sensitivities and then cutting back or abstaining from food completely is perhaps the most important thing you can do to treat this condition. As with many consequences of a food intolerance, the cause can be determined by applying the elimination method. This will help you find out which food could be the cause. An excellent tool for this is our food sensitivity test. In addition, you get the results of the food you are intolerant to. You can then apply the elimination method in a targeted manner. This allows you to find out faster which food is the cause.
